To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Oscar-Nominated Editor Mikkel E.G. Nielsen on Giving “Sound of Metal” its Rhythm

April 25, 2021, 10:48 AM

https://www.motionpictures.org/2021/04/oscar-nomin...

Excitement was running high. The team behind Sound of Metal, Darius Marder’s offbeat drama about a punk rock drummer (Riz Ahmed) who faces life-changing decisions after losing his hearing, was gathered together via Zoom to watch the Oscar nomination announcements. Mikkel E.G. Nielsen, the film’s editor, was settled in front of his computer at his home in Copenhagen when the unthinkable happened. The screen went blank.

ACE Eddie Awards preview: Will Oscar nominees for Best Film Editing win here first?

April 16, 2021, 08:39 AM

https://www.goldderby.com/article/2021/ace-eddie-a...

The American Cinema Editors guild, which hands out its awards on April 17, has a good track record as a preview of the Oscar winner for Best Picture (18 out of the last 30) and a great one for forecasting who will win the Film Editing Oscar (22 of the last 30). Not surprisingly, it is also fairly prescient when it comes to predicting the five Film Editing Oscar slots. Four of this year’s Academy Awards nominees contend for this cutting prize; “The Father” was snubbed by the American Cinema...

Oscar Countdown: Day 16: Film Editing

April 9, 2021, 08:48 AM

https://www.nwitimes.com/entertainment/movies/osca...

The American Cinema Editors won't hand out their awards for another week. Then we might get a great clue for the Oscar winner. But right now, there are two easily deserving winners: "The Trial of the Chicago 7," which has to go back and forth from present to flashbacks and do it seamlessly enough to not lose us, and "Sound of Metal," which is a little more linear, but has other challenges in the way of incorporating the sound design into things. "Nomadland" could be a threat, just because it's l...

Will ‘Sound of Metal’ continue the Oscar trend of winning both Film Editing and Sound?

March 27, 2021, 10:03 AM

https://www.goldderby.com/article/2021/sound-of-me...

You wouldn’t necessarily think that sound would go hand-in-hand with film editing, but at the Oscars, those awards have often gone to the same film. In fact, the last seven film editing winners in a row have won one or both sound awards (this year the two sound categories were consolidated). And only seven film editing winners in the last 20 years have failed to win a sound prize. Could “Sound of Metal” continue this trend?

Only nine movies have won Best Picture without at least being nominated for the editing Academy Award since it was introduced in 1934. The last of these was "Ordinary People" in 1980.
