Avid announced that a new free version of Media Composer will be demoed this year at NAB. Called Avid Media Composer | First, it provides a way for people new to the industry such as students or professionals just starting out.

A lot of headaches can be avoided simply by asking the right question before you start working. We have 3 questions for the corporate/commercial editor and 3 for the narrative/feature film editor. So really you're getting double the value here.
