Ever since James Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day was released in 1991, I’ve been reading about the many ways ILM, led by visual effects supervisor Dennis Muren, had to basically invent new ways to realise the CG ‘liquid metal’ T-1000 shots in that film, of which there are surprisingly few. Tools like ‘Make Sticky’ and ‘Body Sock’ are ones that I’d heard referenced several times, but I’ve always wanted to know more about how those pieces of software were made.

The team behind this amazing technological achievement in visual effects has consistently touted the fact that they didn’t simply de-age Will Smith’s face, but instead, they created a completely digital model of young Will Smith that was informed by a motion-capture performance. For those who have worked in Adobe After Effects long enough to know, creating sleek and professional motion graphic animation for simple things like text, titles, and lower thirds can actually be pretty simple on paper. When you utilize the myriad of templates and quick guide tutorials, you have quite a few options always at your fingertips. However, just because you have some solid go-tos doesn’t mean you still can’t kick them up to that next level.
